Birth Announcement: Welcoming Penny

As a designer who is also a mum, I find the most fulfilling projects are those creations for my little girl. They’re also the hardest. My husband always says I put too much pressure on myself to get these done perfectly (with so little free time in the day, I know he’s right – but of course I’ll never tell him as much!).

These things I do as a labour of love. In years to come, our little girl will grow up and fly the nest and I’ll no longer have the joy of creating a mermaid party or designing a cowboy invite or whatever else tickles her fancy (and mine!). But she will have a small collection of cards, invitations, trinkets and costumes that were all made especially for her by me…bits she can treasure and hopefully look back on with happy memories.

So when in late (very late!) August my second little girl, Penelope, arrived, I of course immediately started thinking about her birth announcement. In between night feeds, nappy changes and moving house (yes, I know!!) all I wanted to do was to create something fun and memorable.

When Anouk was born I opted for something bold and funny (which is exactly how I would describe her personality to people now) whereas with Penny I immediately thought soft colours, curly fonts and something that would put a warm smile on your face. Which is exactly what she does to us on a daily basis.

I decided to go for a number-based design. Some of these informative (weight, number of days overdue etc), some of them embarrassing (yes, he really did faint!), and most with an element of fun.

We love a good laugh in our house and it just seemed appropriate that welcoming this little darling girl into our lives should put a smile on the face of those closest to us who will form such an important part of her life.
